Every instance of written language has specific visual features.
Visual poets experiment with the ways the shape of words on a page, or choices of type size and styles, contribute to the meaning of the text.

The tradtion of shaped poetry has its roots in antiquity, but the modern innovations of experimental poetry began with early 20th-century avant garde artists like Dada poets Tristan Tzara and Raoul Hausmann - many of whom took their inspiration from print advertising.
